I’m Courtney, a 23 year old college grad student who recently lost 50 lbs, got into running and nutrition, and signed up for my first 5k which I will be running April 10th!  My career path has a lot to do with why I wanted to lose weight and become healthier.  I am going to be an epidemiologist. Basically, I will work in the public health field evaluating the distribution and determinants of diseases. I decided to become healthy because I thought “who is going to listen to someone in the public health field who is not healthy?”  I moved to Florida May of 2009 from Virginia.  This was the best move… I really hate cold weather!!  I am a proud mother of two pugs, one is 5 years old and the other is 8 weeks.

Aren’t they cute?  I have a boyfriend, Matt, who you will hear about often on the blog.  This is him:

Cute right?

How I lost the weight:

When I moved to Tampa I knew exactly zero people and didn’t have my dogs yet.  Needless to say, I was bored!  I started going to a local park and walking 4 laps (approx 5 miles).  After doing this for sometime I decided that it was taking way too much time and I needed to try to get it done quicker so I started to jog small intervals during the five laps.  I gradually worked up my stamina to where I could run all five miles.  I run about 5 days a week, anywhere from 2-4 miles depending on how I feel.  I also make use of my school gym a couple of days a week to strength train and do the elliptical.  I really enjoy running outside but for some reason I can’t run on a treadmill.  I absolutely hate it!

It took me about eight months to lose the weight.  During those eight months I made gradual changes to my diet.  First, I cut out white carbs.  Then I added more fruits and veggies. The last change I made was cutting down the amount of meat I ate.  I used to think you should eat meat with every meal but now I only eat white meat and once a day if that.

Why I started this blog:

I started this blog because I wanted to be an inspiration just like the other bloggers I read religiously.  The blogs always encouraged me, helped me gain nutritional knowledge, and provided entertainment of course.

This summer I will begin my busiest semester yet.  I will be doing an internship approximately 25-30 hours a week plus taking two classes.  I am hoping this blog will be a way for me to keep track of my eating habits and my exercise.

My blog is named 14 to 4 because I went from a size 14 to a size 4!

Congratulations on your blog! Are you excited?

Hey! Thanks for checking out my blog! I’m from Tampa, so cool that you live there now!

I really like the area. I still haven’t done any downtown exploration yet, though. Any cool areas to go to?
